Dental prophylaxis (cleaning) is done to clean the teeth/gum line, but also to evaluate the oral cavity for any problems that may be present.We use a mechanical scaler to remove hard calculus from the tooth's surface and below the gum line. This increases the speed of the procedure, which means decreased anesthetic time.
Cleaning the teeth causes microscopic roughening of the tooth surface. Polishing smoothes the surface, and reduces future build-up of plaque and tartar.
